About St. Martin Council
on Aging, Inc.
Acadiana Advocate
Since 1973, the St. Martin Council on Aging, Inc. has operated in an advocacy capacity, linking the seniors of St. Martin Parish to vital services needed to help them age gracefully. The goal of the agency is to help seniors remain independent for as long as possible. SMCOA also provides such services as home-delivered meals, transportation to vital doctor’s appointments and dialysis treatments, grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, laundromats, and even to the homes of family members and friends. Our mission is to “Make Every Day A Better Day” for the seniors of St. Martin Parish.
St. Martin Council on Aging, Inc. also provides support and caregiver services such as homemaker, sitting, respite, and wellness checks. The caregiver component is especially important for individuals who might need a bit of a break from the daily task of caring for an elderly parent or grandparent. Research has shown that caregivers are more likely to become ill due to exhaustion, stress, fatigue, etc.
In addition to the traditional bingo, seniors can enjoy a hot, nutritious lunch with their peers, celebrate monthly birthdays, gain knowledge and information about healthy eating, making better life choices and proper money management, receive vital health screenings-including hearing and vision, participate in arts and crafts activities, learn Zydeco or line dancing, learn about scams and fraud, learn how to practice safety while driving and receive information about all of the valuable resources afforded to them as they age. Presentations are made by certified professionals on a monthly basis.
